 Meningitis B Vaccination

  • £190 per dose

  • Adults need two doses 4 weeks apart
  • Babies – 8wks, 12 wks and a booster at 1 year
  • Infants aged 2-5 months – 3 doses a month apart and a booster between 12-15 months
  • Infants 6-11 months, 2 doses 2 months apart and a booster between 12-23 months

A meningitis B (MenB) vaccination is recommended because it protects against one of the most dangerous and fast-acting infections in the UK.

For adults in the UK, including at your age, the meningitis B (MenB) vaccine (usually Bexsero) is given as:

  • Dose 1: Day 0
  • Dose 2: At least 1 month later (usually 4–8 weeks)

Routine booster is NOT currently recommended for healthy adults.

You may need extra doses or boosters if you:

  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Have no spleen / reduced spleen function
  • Are on certain immune-suppressing medicines
  • Have specific medical conditions affecting immunity
  • Are at ongoing high risk (e.g. lab workers)

Good protection for several years after the 2-dose course is obtained.

Meningitis B Can Be Life-Threatening, Meningococcal group B infection can cause:

  • Meningitis (infection of the brain lining)
  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

These can develop within hours and can be fatal even with treatment.

In the UK:

  • Around 1 in 10 people with MenB infection die
  • Up to 1 in 3 survivors are left with serious long-term problems

Possible long-term effects include:

  • Hearing loss
  • Brain injury
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Loss of limbs (in severe sepsis cases)

The Vaccine Is Very Effective. The Men B vaccine gives strong protection against most strains circulating in the UK.

It:

  • Greatly reduces your risk of catching the disease
  • Makes illness much less severe if you do get it

Because meningitis is rare but severe, vaccination is about preventing a low-chance, high-impact event.

MenB is most common in babies and young children where the immune systems are still developing. Teenagers and young adults, especially students can spread Meningitis B through close contact (kissing, sharing drinks, crowded living)

Adults aged over 60 are at risk and there are complications with age.

Meningitis B Vaccine is not routinely offered to adults on the NHS in the UK.

Side Effects Are Usually Mild

Most people get:

  • Sore arm
  • Mild fever
  • Tiredness
  • Headache

These usually settle in 1–2 days.

Serious side effects are very rare.

Peace of Mind

Many people choose MenB vaccination simply for reassurance — especially if they:

  • Have grandchildren
  • Are around young people
  • Travel
  • Have underlying health issues
  • Want to reduce avoidable health risks

You might consider MenB vaccination because it:

  • Protects against a fast, deadly infection
  • Reduces risk of severe complications
  • Is especially relevant over age 60
  • Is safe and well-tested
  • Provides long-term peace of mind

MUMS Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Vijay Iyer and MUMS Private GPs, administer Meningitis B Vaccine to babies aged over 2 months, infants, adolescents, and adults.

Worrying about meningitis is normal, especially if you have children. While no vaccine is 100 percent effective, getting vaccinated against the main strains of meningitis is the best way to help prevention.

This Meningitis B vaccination protects against almost 90 percent of the strains of meningococcal group B bacteria (which is a cause of meningitis) in England.

This vaccine is normally offered as part of the NHS child vaccine programme.

We recommend that babies aged 8 weeks and above have their first dose and a second dose at 16 weeks and a booster at 1 year to 15 months.. There must be at least one month between the first and second dose and two months between the second dose and the booster. The booster should not be given later than 2 years.

Infants aged 6 months to 11 months at the time of the first dose should receive two injections followed by a booster with at least 2 months between the doses.

For children aged between 12 months and 23 months – they should receive two injections followed by a booster with at least 2 months between doses. Normally the booster is given 12 months to 23 months after the second injection.

For children aged 2 years to 10 years at the time of their first dose – they should be given two injections at least one month apart followed by a booster.

For adolescents aged 11 years and above and adults– they should be given two injections at least one month apart followed by a booster.

Those children and adults who fall outside of the NHS vaccination programme can have this vaccine privately at MUMS Solihull.

Meningitis can affect anybody. It’s most common in children, teenagers and young adults aged between 15 and 24. That’s because these groups tend to socialise more at school and universities, which leads to the spreading of bacteria. Outbreaks can happen at any time though and to anybody. Around 20 percent of reported MenB cases are in people aged 45 and over.

Meningitis is a serious infection which can cause brain damage, deafness and blindness and can be fatal.  It’s usually caused by bacteria or a virus.

Meningococcal bacteria are the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK and can lead to meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia).

Out of the 5 most common groups – Meningitis is most prevalent in terms of reported cases of meningococcal meningitis.
